INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

CIJ was awarded with the 9th Latin American edition of the Reina Sofía Award against drugs and the Mentor Foundation award for its continuous and valuable work.

CIJ participated to the Open-ended intergovernmental expert working group in demand reduction in September, 2008. CIJ is part of the Mexican delegation to te annual sessions of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs. Also, CIJ participated in Side Events organized by Vienna Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Committee on Narcotic Drugs (VNGOC), and is a member of it.

CIJ is an active member of the World Federation against Drugs (WFAD).

CIJ is the representative of Latin America and Caribbean for the International Council on Alcohol and Addictions (ICAA), which is the oldest in the field of research on alcohol and drugs that involves NGOs worldwide. Also, CIJ is an active member of the Board and was the co-host of the 53rd International ICAA Conference on Dependencies which was held in Cancún, Mexico.

Also, CIJ collaborates with the Ibero-American Network of NGOs working in the field of Drug Dependence (RIOD) and the Drug Prevention Network of the Americas (DPNA/RIPRED).

Since five years ago, CIJ organizes a Congress that relies on the participation of experts from international organizations as UN, UNOFC, WHO, PAHO, OAS, CICAD, ICAA, ONDCP, INL, SAMHSA, RIPRED and RIOD, among others.

During the World Congress on Addictions 2009 “Experiences based on evidence”, CIJ launched Call to Action in Favor of Prevention and Against Marihuana Legalization signed by the institution, European Cities against Drugs (ECAD), Drug Prevention Network of the Americas (DPNA), Drug Prevention Network of Canada (DPNOC), Latin American Association of Addictions (ALAD), Uganda Youth Development Link (UYDEL), Community Alliances for Drug Free Youth (CADFY) and International Faith based Coalition.

In the NGO Forum “Beyond 2008” organized by of the Vienna Non-Governmental Organization committee (VNGOC), CIJ participated as one Regional Leader Organization (RLO) for the Regional Consultation of Latin America and Caribbean Region. CIJ has the necessary and adequate infrastructure and human and material resources to the implementation of the NGO Questionnaire and revision of UNGASS 98. CIJ has an important system of data collection that is the basis of the national and regional databases. CIJ presented the results in July, 2008 and we have been spreading it to all our networks in order to expose the importance of the role of the NGO’s addressing the drug problem. Also, CIJ become part of this unified voice that represents all the victims of drugs. The participation of CIJ in “Beyond 2008” laid the foundations that allow CIJ to be a more important part of the design and implementation of the public policies on drugs in Mexico.
