Psychiatrist graduated in Medicine and Surgery by the Complutense University of Madrid, he completed his training as a psychiatrist at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital in Madrid between 1980 and 1984.
He was head of the "Retiro" Mental Health Service of the Institute of Psychiatry and Mental Health of the Gregorio Marañón University General Hospital; founding president of the Spanish Society of Dual Pathology; vice-president of the World Association on Dual Disorders and coordinator of the “Ibero-American Consensus on Dual Disorders” of the Pan American Health Organization, where he represented the National Drugs Plan of Spain
He is member of the consultative council of the Spanish Government “Spanish Council for Drug Addiction and Other Addictions”; member of the Responsible Gambling Advisory Council, of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs; president of the Dual Pathology Foundation and chair of the World Psychiatry Association, Section on Dual Disorders.
He is reviewer and member of the Editorial Board of National and International Publications. He has published dozens of scientific articles in national and international journals, several books and more than 40 book chapters, most of them focused on dual pathology.
